Essaouira (pronounced ‘Essa-weera’ or ‘es-Sweera in Arabic) is a small UNESCO protected, idyllic city located along the Atlantic Ocean. The city has a rich history throughout many centuries of different populations. Nowadays it is a melting pot of diverse people, cultures and religions. The locals are very hospital and the city has an easy going vibe. Because of the many divers’ artists such as painters, writers and musicians who have always been drawn to the area, the city has a colorful and ‘free spirit’ ambiance.  Given the city is located along the coast; you can enjoy the views of the picturesque harbor and try out the delicious fresh fish!

Essaouira, the city of Mogador (original name which was given by the Phoenicians), has a lot to offer her visitors, for young and old. You can spend your holiday relaxing at the beach or you can stroll along the narrow and enchanting streets of the Medina. Here you will find many different merchants and craftsmen selling food, Berber carpets, leather, local wooden art, clothing, silver, herbal spices and many more. The Medina is surrounded by the old ramparts walls and make sure you visit the Sqala where you can still see the canons which were build by the Portuguese in 15th century.  The harbor is a treat to visit and witness all the blue fisher boats that come in with fresh fish. Daily there is a fish auction at the harbor and be sure to visit the local fish market inside the medina. There are many activities in and around the city, such as: kitsurfing, surfing, kayaking, paddle boarding, golf, quadbiking, horsebackriding, camelriding, biking and paintball. For those who are more into less active things, there are many Spa’s and Hammams where you can be pampered with a massage, gommage or a beauty treatment.

Throughout the year there are several international music festivals, such as; Gnawa Festival, Music D’Alizee, the Andaluz Music Festival and many more. People come from all over the world to visit these festivals because of their high quality in music.

Essaouira is also known to be called; ‘The city of wind’ because of the wind which blows almost throughout the whole year.  It’s the place to be in Morocco to have a relaxed kitesurf holiday.
